Neo-Expressionism

Neo-Expressionism, also known as the Trans-avant-garde, Energism, New Fauvism or Wild Painting, is primarily represented by painters starting in the 1970s. Of all the new tendencies born in the 1970s, Neo-expressionism has prevailed as the strongest and most significant. Aggressive, emotional handling of diverse materials characterizes this style, whose exponents have used straw and broken ceramics on their canvases. Most of Neo-Expressionist work is figurative, although the highly activated picture plane recalls much of the work of painters in the 1950s. Many of the artists created large paintings, and in the 1980s, when this style flourished, extraordinarily large sums were collected for the sale of the works. Some of the most famous and successful artists have become stars in international fields of art and entertainment, including Francesco Clemente, Julian Schnabel, David Salle and Mimmo Paladino.
